Michigan regulates the setting, not the marketing label. A community that calls itself assisted living or memory care is licensed by LARA either as a Home for the Aged (21 or more residents, age 55 and up) or as an Adult Foster Care home, and each license has its own rules, inspections and complaint process.
Michigan has no license called "assisted living" or "memory care." Both are delivered in a Home for the Aged (21 or more residents age 55 and up) or an Adult Foster Care home licensed by LARA; memory care is that same license with Alzheimer's listed as a population served, usually in a secured unit with dementia-trained staff.
| Assisted living is... | Memory care is... | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it serves | Adults who need help with bathing, dressing or medications but can live safely in an open building | People with Alzheimer's or another dementia who may wander or need constant cueing |
| Building | Open doors; residents come and go | Usually a secured (locked or alarmed) wing or house |
| How LARA's record shows it | Home for the Aged or AFC license with "Aged" served | Same license with "Alzheimer's" listed under populations served |
| Disclosure rule | Residency agreement and service plan | A Home for the Aged that markets dementia care must give families a written description of the program (MCL 333.20178) |
| It isn't... | A nursing home - there is no 24-hour nurse requirement | Skilled nursing - complex medical needs still require a licensed nursing home |
| Typical 2026 cost | $3,800 to $5,600 per month | $4,800 to $6,800 per month |
LARA posts a facility's original licensing study, its renewal inspections and every special investigation report on a public profile. Across the 193 listed facilities, 131 have at least one special investigation report posted (365 reports in all). A report means a complaint was investigated; each one states whether a violation was established.
40 of the metro's larger, best-known assisted living and memory care communities have full profiles that summarize each special investigation since October 2023 and the latest renewal inspection, with local hospital context and tour questions. Every other listed facility has a shorter registry page.
Every listing comes from the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), Bureau of Community and Health Systems (BCHS): the statewide text file of Adult Foster Care and Homes for the Aged facilities (license number, licensed capacity, license dates, populations served, licensee, rule-violation flag), cross-checked against each facility's LARA facility profile for its posted licensing studies, renewal inspections and special investigation reports.
Scope: every active Home for the Aged, plus every Adult Foster Care large-group or congregate home licensed to serve the aged, in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. Small AFC homes (six or fewer residents) are not listed. LARA updates its file daily; we re-pull it monthly. Last updated: October 24, 2026. Something out of date? Tell us on the contact page.
